Lynne Stokes, professor of statistical science, retired at the end of the spring 2023 term. Stokes earned a bachelor's in mathematics from the University of the South and a master's and doctorate in statistics from the University of North Carolina. After stops at Vanderbilt University, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Census Bureau and the University of Texas at Austin, she joined SMU as professor in 2001. She served as chair of the Department of Statistical Science - the first woman to do so - from 2016 to 2019. An expert in survey sampling and educational statistics, Stokes published 59 journal articles, seven book chapters and numerous other papers; she directed 16 doctoral dissertations; and she was principal investigator of 21 extramural grants. She served on committees for the American Statistical Association, the National Academy of Sciences and other agencies. Stokes received numerous national awards, including fellowship in the American Statistical Association (ASA), the ASA Founders Award and the Donald B. Owen Award. At SMU, she earned the Caren Prothro Faculty Service Award, the Dedman College Distinguished Professorship and the Methodist Teacher Scholar Award. She retires as professor emerita of statistical science.
